Trinidad Colorado Gravel

Gorgeous high-country gravel riding

In a few short years, Trinidad and Las Animas County have emerged as a gravel bike destination that offers a unique old-west inspired, rural cycling experience. With a county road network of 1,600+ miles, cyclists can enjoy a number of rides that see more cattle guards than cars, all while taking in the culture, history, and scenery that make this region distinctly different than the rest of Colorado. Trinidad itself still has its old western charm – you’ll love the charming Victorian architecture and brick-lined streets.
The route is best suited to a gravel bike (a drop-bar bike with a tire width over 30mm), and is only for riders with advanced bike handling skills who have experience on varied surfaces. Due to safety concerns, we do not allow e-bikes on this ride. Thanks for understanding!
We hope you can join us to explore this often-overlooked part of Colorful Colorado!

Day 1: After meeting your guides and fellow cyclists at the Colorado Springs airport, you’ll have a scenic shuttle to Trinidad. Today we’ll have a mellow warmup ride in Trinidad to get a feel for the riding in the area (and get used to the altitude!). Enjoy the flowing ranchlands and views of the mountains beyond. Tonight we’ll enjoy dinner together in Trinidad.

Day 2: Today we’ll do a loop ride, starting from the hotel. After a few short, technical sections to get your adrenaline going, we’ll soon reach beautiful gravel roads that give you great views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Spanish Peaks. After the ride, you’re free to explore Trinidad on your own for dinner.

Day 3: We have a quick shuttle to the start of our ride today. It’s the most challenging and longest ride of the tour, and the amazing views make it all the more awesome. Our loop takes us into the Spanish Peaks wildlife area, up and down a few beautiful passes, and back to the valley where we began. We’ll have dinner together tonight in Trinidad again.

Day 4: We’ll leave Trinidad today and start our next ride in the town of Aguilar. We have a short, but spectacular, ride! This is your final day of gravel riding. The route lands you in La Veta, a small town in the heart of the Spanish Peaks. This small, laid-back town is located along the Scenic Highway of Legends. La Veta, the vein, served as a vital lifeline a century ago; the town was originally a busy trading center, supplying the nearby area with goods. It is now home to a diverse population of artists and ranchers. Our accommodation tonight is La Veta Inn, a charming historic hotel.

Day 5: The next two days give you the opportunity to explore Great Sand Dunes National Park! We’ll do all the activities today – hike, explore, maybe even go sand sledding! Tonight we’ll stay at the Great Sand Dunes Lodge, where you can relax at the foot of the majestic Sangre De Cristo mountain range during after visiting the National Park.

Day 6: Use your last day to take another hike in the National Park! Afterwards, your guides will prepare a final lunch before shuttling back to the Colorado Springs airport.
