Ohiopyle is home to Ohiopyle State Park, a popular outdoor recreation mecca that covers more than 20,000 acres and is the gateway to the Laurel Highlands Mountains. The Youghiogheny River, or “Yough”, as it is popularly called, has three different levels of white water rafting trips run on it. The Upper, Middle, and Lower Yough sections are different degrees of white water intensity, ideal for different experience levels and ages.
Your Ohiopyle whitewater rafting adventure awaits in southwestern Pennsylvania, only an hour away from Pittsburgh and Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. Ohiopyle is also a 3 hour drive from Cleveland and Akron Ohio, and Washington, DC.
The Lower Yough is our most popular trip, with daily departures April through October. This river section is a total blast! It involves Class 3 white water, which means fun waves and fast action is punctuated by easy meandering sections, at regular water levels. The Lower Yough trip doesn’t require any prior experience; first timers and rafting enthusiasts alike love this trip. The minimum age is 12, because the whitewater goes up to Class 3. (Younger kids can do the easier Middle Yough Class 1-2 rafting trip.) The standard Lower Yough rafting trip is a guide-assisted trip, there are additional options to make it a fully guided trip or a private deluxe trip.
The easy, gentle Class 1 and 2 raft trip that goes from Confluence PA downstream (but north) to Ohiopyle PA. The Middle Yough is perfect for First timers, kids as young as 5, and combination GAP biking/rafting trips are available on the Middle Yough. Want a relaxed river trip for multi-generation family members? The Middle Yough is for you! You have the largest assortment of rental boats available to you on this section of the Yough, because the rapids are so mild. You can rent rafts, stand up paddle boards, canoes, shredders, sit on top kayaks, and duckies (inflatable kayaks) for paddling fun on the Middle Yough.
The Upper Yough trip meets in Friendsville, Maryland, just twenty five minutes from Ohiopyle. The Upper Yough trip is Class 4 -5 white water action, meaning it is high intensity, technical white water rafting requiring prior experience and an aggressive “go for it” attitude. Minimum age on the Upper Yough is 16. Technically, the Upper Yough is not an Ohiopyle rafting trip in that it does not start, end, or go through, Ohiopyle. The Upper Yough section we run is in the far north west corner of Maryland, directly south of Ohiopyle, PA. We are putting it here on the Ohiopyle rafting page because it is part of the Yough River which does flow through Ohiopyle in the Middle and Lower sections.
