West Virginia Whitewater Rafting
Curious about whitewater rafting on the Cheat River? Coming on a trip with us at Wilderness Voyageurs and looking for some info about the Cheat? Here’s a fun video from a beautiful Cheat trip in 2015 to show you our favorite river in West Virginia!
The Cheat River is pure West Virginia white water rafting—a deep, remote canyon, 40+ rapids and few other people on the water. The Cheat Canyon trip, which spans 11 miles of Class III to Class V whitewater surrounded by wilderness in a deep, remote canyon, will impress even the most seasoned rafter.
Our trips start at the Wilderness Voyageurs outpost just north of Albright, West Virginia on route 26. Once on the water, we’ll hit the first rapid in about half a mile. Named Decision, it’s the last chance to turn back! But you won’t want to – Decision gets the excitement going and you’ll find you want more! After that, the river drops 50 feet per mile with tons of rapids and a few calm pools to catch your breath. (While taking a break from the intense whitewater, check out the waterfalls and rock formations cascading into the canyon). You’ll blast through rapids such as Big Nasty, Tear Drop, Coliseum, Fossil Falls, and of course a Swimmers Rapid at the end of the trip.
Springtime is the season for running the Cheat Canyon. As an undamed river, the Canyon shows her stuff when heavy rains and snowmelt make higher water levels. This trip runs primarily from March through June, but we will run anytime we are experiencing good rainfall amounts (especially big summer storms and fall hurricane season).
