Cycling Through Civil War History

A biking vacation through battlefields and countryside

Wilderness Voyageurs Civil War Bike Tour National Geographic Traveler

Welcome back to the 21st century to the 12 riders recently returned from our Gettysburg and Civil War Bike Tour! Starting in Gettysburg, PA, the group cycled back through time, also passing through Antietam and Harpers Ferry, visiting the historic battlefields and endless PA countryside that were once occupied by Union and Confederate soldiers. Besides bolstering their Civil War trivia, we took riders on an inn-to-inn tour that was named by National Geographic as one of 50 tours of a lifetime!

Fully supported bike vacation: on and off the trail

There is a long list of headaches often associated with vacation planning: piles of pamphlets; endless phone calls with automated receptionists; long drives with little leg room; gas station food; seedy hotels because there was no vacancy anywhere else; constant stress about time; etc. Thankfully, our guests never experience any of these things!

Some riders admitted they felt like they woke up in a different century at the Brafferton Inn in Gettysburg.

Vacation means being in the moment and not stressing about trip organization. We take care of all shuttle and transportation logistics and hotel and dinner reservations.  After riders reached their Day 1 destination, they were dazzled by the historic lodging in Gettysburg. The Brafferton Inn, the oldest continual residence in the state, provided riders with a comfortable night’s sleep amidst antebellum luxury. At the end of the 37-mile ride on Day 2, we brought riders to the Antrim 1844 Country Hotel for a 5-star dinner in Taneytown, PA, where Chef Michael Gettier presented a handpicked menu and matching wine list. Finally, we took the group through four national historic parks, where they saw countless monuments commemorating the transformational war in our nation’s history.

Have you already explored PA’s Civil War sites or are you looking for a different kind of scenery on your bike tour vacation?  There are so many places that are worth seeing from your bicycle! Here’s just a couple.

If you loved the feeling of going back in time on the Gettysburg and Civil War Bike Tour, you’ll definitely appreciate being immersed in the ageless culture found on our Pennsylvania Dutch Country Bike Tour.  If you’d like to explore Appalachia, we offer classic PA rides on the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage and the annual Rail-to-Trails Sojourn. If you want to see scenery totally different from what you’re used to on the East Coast, then go BIG, on a Colorado bike tour of the Rocky Mountains or bike the Katy Trail through Missouri! Whatever your destination preference, let Wilderness Voyageurs do all the behind-the-scenes work so you can let your hair down and blow in the wind!
