Biking Maryland’s Eastern Shore -Why?
Wye Not? – (pun alert – Wye River)
The Eastern Shore of Maryland is defined as the region that is east of the Susquehanna River, stretching from the Pennsylvania border in the north to the Virginia border in the south, and gives Delaware a big hug.
You have probably heard of Ocean City, yes that is part of the Eastern Shore, but to make it a bit confusing that is on the ocean side and really is the eastern most point of Maryland, but there is actually a lot more of the region that is actually connected to the “Eastern Shore” of the Chesapeake Bay. This is the area that we are bike touring in, lightly populated, lightly traveled, and full of history.
This area was first inhabited by settlers from England in 1631, and is recognized as the area of the first permanent european settlements in Maryland. This region was shaped by english sensibilities and traditions that were adapted to the new landscape of the Chesapeake Bay. Watermen harvesting oysters and farmers tilling for tobacco are the heartbeat of this region. Biking Maryland’s Eastern Shore will get you up close and personal with nearly 400 years of history, Bald Eagles, off the chart sunsets, and a slower pace of life.
RIDE RELAX CONNECT
1. Extend your biking season
We first trek to the Eastern Shore in April, where you can find the first hints of warm air sliding into the mid-atlantic. The gentle terrain provides a friendly way to get on your bike and start to score some miles. In the fall, we head back to the shore in mid- October to keep that summer feeling flowing. When there is frost in the mountains we know it is time to head to the shore.
2. Seafood
This area is famous for blue crabs and soft shell crabs. mmmmmmmmmm. If you are not a fan of seafood, don’t worry, there is actually other food available.
3. Relaxing
This is one of the main reasons to get away right??? Well this tour provides ample opportunity and really cool settings. So much so, we feel it deserves two pictures.
4. Making new friends
We think the smiles tell the story. Many of our guests, make lasting friendships on our tours and return to tour with those they have met.
5. Sunsets
Yes, we are hung up on the sunsets. We think you will be also after a few days of relaxing and staring out over the water.
