Hexagenia Hatch on the Yough
Hexagenia Limbata, is emerging from the Youghiogheny near Ohiopyle, the highly sought and near mythical bug is a real treat to witness.
This is one of the largest Mayflys in North America and one of the most widespread, found from the Pacific to the Atlantic. The hatch of the Hex varies greatly based on geography. Some areas of the northwest will see hatches starting in May. Here in Ohiopyle, the Hex shows up at the end of August, beginning of September and will hang around for close to a month.
About an hour or so before dusk you can start to use a Hex nymph, you will want to provide a sporadic rising and falling action to the nymph. You will see the hatch start to fire up about 45 minutes before dusk, be prepared.. because it will fire up and go until dark. The fish will have little interest in the bug prior to the hatch starting. But you will have a window to throw the monster dry fly at rising trout once you see the first Hex take flight until you can no longer see due to darkness. When fishing the dry, do not be afraid to put some action into the fly, you will notice that the natural fly will make quite a commotion on the surface.
