Whether this is your first white water rafting trip or you’re an experienced rafter, the Lower Yough (pronounced “Yok”), in the heart of The Laurel Highlands, is a blast!! And what could be a better way to spend a hot summer day then on the river? The Lower Yough is Class III whitewater which means it is fun. It’s perfect for those who haven’t had prior whitewater experience or for those who have. This is typically a guide assisted trip, but we also offer a guide in boat option or a deluxe trip down Ohiopyle’s white water.
You’ll begin your day at Wilderness Voyageurs’ Ohiopyle rafting center where you’ll check in, receive your life jacket & helmet and meet a couple of your River Guides. From there you will be transported to the staging area where you’ll begin your river trip. Dividing into groups of 4 – 6 people, you’ll climb into your rafts for an introduction to river running before hitting the water. River safety, paddle strokes, boat maneuvering and what to expect on the water will all be covered. From there, you will head to the river and the fun begins! After a few moments of getting comfortable in your raft and listening to your captain’s commands, you’ll float into the first Class III rapid, Entrance Rapid. That sets the stage and gives you a feel for the rest of the day.
The Lower Yough is 7.5 miles of Class III – IV whitewater rapids. Ohiopyle Photo of the Month – enjoying the Lower Yough in the heat of JulyIt is considered a drop & pool river: the rapids are separated by calm deep pools, allowing you to catch your breath and enjoy the scenery. You will stop along half way through the day for a deli style lunch – complete with cookies & fruit! It is a thrilling whitewater experience & full of adventure!
The standard trip format for the Lower Youghiogheny, is called “Guide Escorted”. This means that the river guides are in rafts and kayaks and are around you explaining how to navigate the rapids and are stationed throughout the rapids to provide you with directions. You will be captaining your own raft. It is essential to pay attention to the guides and their directions. Wilderness Voyageurs has conducted more that 600,000 people down the Lower Yough in this format over the last 50 years. If you would like to have a guide in your raft or a smaller more intimate rafting trip, there are multiple trip formats available on the Lower Yough. Call to request a guide in your boat (not guaranteed on Guide-Escorted trips), or upgrade to a fully guided trip.
“My husband and I went on a guide escorted tour of the Lower Yough. The guides were great, super knowledgeable and were all very entertaining. They did an excellent job telling everyone how to guide the raft, and were very helpful when it came to navigating the rapids.” ~Topaz597 – Ohio
