Ohiopyle Summer Bucket List
Don’t let summer slip away! If you haven’t come to Ohiopyle yet for an adventure, here’s a checklist to get you started on the fun before Labor Day weekend rolls around!
Eat an ice cream sandwich by the river
At Rapid Java, we have ice cream sandwiches bigger than your face! After hiking, biking or riding the river, you can grab a cool treat and hang out on a rock by the Yough. For maximum enjoyment, take a dog and some sticks for him to fetch. Just don’t forget the napkins – these can get drippy when it’s hot out!
Watch the sunrise from Baughman Rock
An early-morning hike is so rewarding. If you start from the Baughman trailhead on the Great Allegheny Passage around 5:30 a.m., you can catch a spectacular sunrise at the overlook on Baughman Rock. It’s a 2.5-mile hike with some steep terrain, so bring plenty of water and a snack. Worn out from a weekend of adventuring? You can also access the scenic view by driving a couple miles up Sugarloaf Road, and enjoy the sunrise with a hot cup of coffee.
Catch a beautiful fish
The Yough River is great for fishing! Cold water from the Youghiogheny Reservoir Dam helps support a good population of Brook, Brown, and Rainbow Trout. The Yough is a large tailwater fishery, averaging 150 feet across in most spots, so there’s plenty of space for anglers to spread out and fish! Check out our info board in the outfitter store or call our fly-fishing pros to talk about current hatches.
Roast marshmallows over the fire
S’mores are a quintessential summer treat, so roast yours while the weather is good! Build a backyard fire with your friends and bring a bag of marshmallows for nighttime fun. There are plenty of campgrounds in Ohiopyle for an overnight bonfire.
Go whitewater rafting on the Yough
Obviously! What would the summer be without a rafting trip down the Yough? We have whitewater rafting trips for all ages and abilities – from a fun family trip on the Middle Yough to extreme adventure on the Upper Yough in Maryland. Trips on the Lower Yough are available every day until the end of October.
No matter what you do on a summer day in Ohiopyle, you’re bound to make meaningful memories with friends and family. Don’t forget your camera, and don’t stress if you can’t do it all in one day! There’s always next year! Come back and see us soon.
