River Review – the Cheat Narrows

River Review – the Cheat Narrows

After 7 years of kayaking, I finally went and checked out the class II-III Cheat Narrows, a family- and beginner-oriented run in northern West Virginia, near Rowlesburg.

Cheat River Narrows Family

I have to say that this run was a pleasant surprise. The rapids were straightforward, but very fun. Lots of wavetrains and friendly hydraulics, but no really dangerous spots. Intermediate paddlers will find lots of places to play and plenty of eddys to catch.

Rafters will enjoy the fun rapids and appreciate the pools between rapids. They’re a perfect place to swim – either for fun or back to your boat! – or to check out the beautiful river gorge that is the Cheat Narrows. Indeed, despite all the local mining, the Cheat Narrows is virtually untouched and very scenic.
