Upper Yough - Wilderness Voyageurs

Sliding Through Heinzerling – Upper Yough

It was another big day on the Upper! After a week of continuous rain and heavy, natural flow, Fridays Deep Creek release of roughly 600 CFS brought the river up to an exciting 2.5 feet, making some of the rivers low-water lines a bit gnarly.  After hitting the water, the first mile and a half were fairly calm until just above Falls Gap where the sky’s opened up and the rain started dumping.

A huge rumbling storm had everyone on their toes, even before we hit the first class IV rapid. If this was any projection as to how the day would unfold, this was definitely not a trip for the weak hearted!  Upper Yough 2 - Wilderness VoyageursWe caught a break in the weather just in time for the start of the “Miracle Mile”, a ridiculous elevation drop of over 120 feet per mile that cuts out rock formations like Triple Drop and National Falls, both class IV+ rapids.

Upper Yough 3 - Wilderness Voyageurs

Descending further into the canyon, there were still almost 20 back-to-back rapids to come! Wilderness Voyageurs’ talented guide staff had no trouble smoothing out these lines and even took some time to surf a few waves.  We’re just one month into the Upper Yough season with scheduled dam releases for Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays until October 15.
