Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Recently, have you seen someone standing in the middle of a lake? Walking down a river? Chances are good they actually had a floating platform under their feet and a funny looking paddle in their hand.
This is Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) boarding and it is coming to a waterway near you! This sport is the latest innovation in the kayaking/paddle sports world. Combine a stable surfboard with a large canoe paddle and you have an incredibly versatile water machine, which is suitable for use in the ocean, lake or river. The appeal of SUPing is easy to see, you are not in an enclosed boat like a kayak, less cumbersome gear, and a shorter learning curve.

The Nitty Gritty: Your introduction to SUPing will begin on the shores of Youghiogheny Lake. Here we start with an overview of the different kinds of paddleboards, related safety equipment and the terminology you will be using. Next up is paddling techniques, balance and how to position your feet and body on the board. Now it is time to hit the water. We will spend a few hours focused on you gaining comfort with balancing on the board and gaining stability. As you become more comfortable walking on water, the focus will shift to paddling technique and ultimately maneuvering the board.
After a lakeside lunch, we move to the Youghiogheny River in Confluence. Your new skills + moving water= big fun! This section of the Youghiogheny has very mild current and friendly eddies and waves. This setting is prime for the transition from lake paddling towards whitewater SUPing. We will paddle 2 miles of the Youghiogheny down to the Ramcat Launch area.
This day is intended to give you a full exposure to the sport so you can determine if you want to keep on moving up the learning curve. If the answer is YES, join us for a second day where we will focus on moving water and fine tuning moving water paddling techniques.
