Whitewater Rafting for Boy Scouts
Whitewater Rafting for Boy Scouts
Wilderness Voyageurs was started by scouters! Lance Martin was running canoe trips and rafting trips for scouts in the late 50's. He brought troops from Pittsburgh out into the hills of Ohiopyle and a company and an industry were born. Today, we are still actively involved with all of the Scout Councils of Western PA. Whitewater Rafting on the Lower Youghiogheny: The Lower Yough (pronounced “Yok”), where the scenery is beautiful and the rapids are challenging. The river runs through the protected wilderness of Ohiopyle State Park, Pennsylvania’s largest park. This is an excellent river section for the your scouts ages 12 & over. They will have a blast! The Lower Yough is a Class III “Drop & Pool” river. Meaning every whitewater rapid is separated by a calm deep pool, allowing your scouts to catch their breath, goof with friends, start a water fight and prepare for the next wave of fun. Due to dams upstream, the Lower Yough has dependable class III whitewater from early spring to fall foliage. Scouts love this trip!
Has your scout unit been rafting on the Lower Yough and you are looking for more of a challenge? The Cheat River Canyon in Albright, West Virginia is a spring time run that is class 4 to class 5. Minimum age is 16, and you must have rafted previously to attend this trip. Call for scout pricing. The Upper Yough in Friendsville, Maryland is a dam release class 5 river.
