| When you depict elevation profile over 335 miles in a few inches, the scale can greatly exaggerate the steepness of the ride. The steepest section of the Great Allegheny Passage rail trail going west is between Cumberland and Frostburg. It climbs about 1,300 feet in 15 miles for an average uphill grade of 1.78% and a maximum grade of 3%. Greenway Sojourn riders have an option to ride a tourist railroad for this section which shares the same route as the rail trail, in fact this 15 mile section is called a "rail with trail". If you choose to ride your bike up this section, don't be intimated by the graphic. When you reach the maximum 3% section, you only have to climb 3 feet in elevation for every 100 feet of trail, in other words you need to climb 9 feet in elevation the length of a football field (not including end zones). That isn't very steep and is very doable. |
