Let me be clear, Ohiopyle is not for everyone, if you want to sit in a coffee shop and discuss art, go to the latest movie, shop at the mall, not the place for you. If you like to get wet or muddy, go kayaking or fly fishing before work, need to trail run every day, well then you should read this entire post.

 Ohiopyle Outdoor activities

Whitewater rafting is what put this town on the map, and the accessibility to it is a huge reason to want to work here.  Unlike many whitewater rivers where you have to do long shuttles in your car on back roads to get to the river, here it flows right through our little town.   So before or after work it is easy to walk across the street, throw your kayak in the river and get a mile and a half of class 3 whitewater, then walk back to the shop, just in time for work.

Trail running- more than 70 miles of trails with in Ohiopyle State Park await your feet.  Lace up and head out the back door

Fly fishing in Ohiopyle is still a bit of a secret, but don’t be fooled.  The Yough is a classic tailwater, with trout friendly water temps all summer long.  This produces reliable hatches  and a good consistent fishery.  Once again, walk over the bank and start swinging flys, 100 yards from where you report to work.  18 miles of trout water await you.

Ohiopyle Mountain Biking— if you are not tired of mountain biking all day as a bike guide 😉 then saddle up and head back out.  Miles of trails that start in Ohiopyle will deliver you to the top of the ridge, and a bomber descent back into the Yough Valley.

Are you starting to get the picture?  Great, get in your car and come visit us.  We are only 1 hour from Pittsburgh.

Ohiopyle Beer & Food

We do have some level of civilized  goodness here.  Ohiopyle actually has 4 places where you can get a great cup of coffee, we are partial to our own Rapid Java, but options do exist.  Believe it or not we have a bakery, the resurgence of this art has found its way into our little valley, hats off to Rob at the Ohiopyle Bakery.  That guy is at work every morning at about 4:30 AM, make sure to get a Pepperoni Roll, they are possibly the best in the world.

What would a day of playing outside be without an awesome beverage of some sort, your preference. If you are into “Adult” Beverages, slide down Garrett Street to the Falls City Pub.  With 50 micro- brews to choose from, many from local PA breweries, Helltown, Rivertowne, North Country are just a few of the breweries that you will find rotating through.

Ohiopyle’s #1  restaurant ..Falls City Pub is open every day and has some healthy fare, hummus plates, Mediterranean Sandwich, Portabella Wraps, and of course Pub grub.. Burgers as big as your head, Salmon Wraps, and home made salsa.

If you like to cook your own food, well things have gotten a tad easier with the opening of Ohiopyle’s local produce market , Back Yard Gardens Market.  Vicki brings in local produce and works with a CSA to keep it fresh.  She even has some local wines available.

There you have it gourmet coffee, fresh bread, micro-beers, local vegetables and pub food.. Nirvana.

Keep in mind that all of this action, places to hang, places to play are all packed into this little valley.  Ohiopyle Borough is only about 75 acres.  It is the hole in the donut of Ohiopyle State Park.

Over the years many of our past staff have found this piece of paradise so compelling they have moved here and raised their families.  We have many raft guides today who are second generation guides, even cooler, we have some father and son teams working the river together.

Have we piqued your interest ?  Check out this article on how to become a river guide?

Give us a call and have a chat and see if you are a good fit for our team..
