Ohiopyle Fishing Report May 31

Ohiopyle Fishing Report May 31

GREEN DRAKES are here!! They have been seen sparsely for about 5 days. In general, they tend to be first spotted on Meadow Run and Beaver Creek, where water temperatures are higher.

On the Youghiogheny, they will be first seen on the Loop, the 1.5 miles below Ohiopyle Falls. Look for the hatch to progress upstream to about 3 miles south of Ohiopyle. You will have the best luck fishing emerger patterns, Yough trout do not seem to get as dialed in on the dry fly for the Green Drake. You will have have some success fishing the dry for the Brown Drake and the Sulpher.

This weekend we anticipate the Yough to drop back towards fishable levels and the color to abate. All tributaries should be fishable by Saturday AM.

-Green Drakes sz 8-10
-Brown Drakes sz 8- 10
-March Browns sz 10 12
-sulphurs sz 14-16
other flys to try:
Bead Head Princes sz 12-18
Pheasant Tails sz16-18
-and, of course, ubiquitous midges sz 20-26
If you like to swing streamers, head for the Olive & White patterns in sz 4-8
Remember in early Spring, colder water slows the trout’s metabolism. Swing your streamers for best results. As the water warms, you can begin to strip your streamers as the trout begin to chase. At this moment the Yough is a tad cooler than normal for this time of year.

European nymphing is a great technique in the Spring. Two or three nymphs fished deep with a little movement will usually outproduce indicator nymphing. “Go to” patterns should include bead head versions of the Prince, Pheasant Tail and Hare’s Ear nymphs in sizes 12 to 18. Caddis larvae patterns in tan and olive as well as brighter green to match the “rock worm” should be fished in sizes 14 to 16. Suckers spawn as water temperatures reach the 40’s. Your favorite sucker spawn patterns should be in your early Spring fly box. Try bright colors when the water is off color and go with paler shades as the water clears. Use a heavily weighted nymph such as the Vladi worm to anchor your nymph rig.
