Class IV-V FUN!

Where? Only the day will tell...

When - there is good water!

Join the club, become part of a group of experienced paddlers who receive special notice when river conditions are prime- year round! Off the beaten path rafting and pushing the envelope is what “The Adventurers’ Club” is about.

WARNING: We will push the envelope on these special trips. While safety is paramount when running trips, the very nature of the rivers and water levels that we will be running, increased risk is inherent. The risks associated with these trips will be in excess of what you would encounter on our regularly scheduled trips. Wouldn't’t it be nice to know when some of the best whitewater in the East is running? NOW you will be in the know. Members will receive a notice by email when river conditions are primo.

Some of the rivers that The Adventurers’ Club may see on a Tour de Force of whitewater:

Big Sandy River- A tributary to the Cheat, this “creek” can only be run within a few days of a considerable rain event. Rafts are the standard craft. This is our standard high water alternative to the Upper Yough. The Big sandy is very similar in the Nature to the Upper with long technical rapids that provide considerable wallop for a “small” volume river.

Tygart Valley Falls This gem is actually more likely to be run late in the summer when everything else is dry. Why is that? We are paddling water from the Stonewall Jackson Reservoir that is being released to augment natural flows of the Monongahela River. Ducks are the only option, and did we mention we will be running some water falls today? Oh yeah, this trip is all about waterfalls! We will only paddle 2.5 miles today, but more importantly will be the number of vertical feet we paddle ( or drop). That limit will be up to you.

Top Yough - You guessed it, above the Upper Yough lies the TOP Yough. This butt kicking section of whitewater starts with a 30 foot cascade water fall. OH YEAH we mean it. Traditionally we experience the Top Yough in Duckies, at really high flows we will raft it. Previous duckie experience is highly recommended, the put-in is only 100 yards above the water falls, no time to figure out how to operate one of these contraptions.

Indian Creek - a tributary to the Lower Yough, we will actually suit up for this mission at our Ohiopyle base. Ducks or rafts will be used based on water levels. Either way, surfing will be the theme of the day. The gradient is very similar to the Big Sandy and the Upper Yough, but the river bed resembles the large sandstone shelves that make up the Lower Yough, providing large surf waves and big eddies so you can stop and do it again. You are probably shaking your head and searching around on the map to figure out what we are talking about with these rivers/creeks. Perfect!

Savage River
Located in Western Maryland, the Savage River is a little know gem, that hosted the 1989 Whitewater kayaking world Championships.  The Savage delivers quite a thrill through 5 miles of continuous class III-IV whitewater.

The Savage is a small volume, fast paced, constant whitewater roller coaster.  The trip covers 5 river miles, during which the longest “pool” is 50 yards long. The Savage is not as technical as the Upper Yough, but the constant nature of the rapids is such that all rafters should have previous rafting experience.   Robust paddling and a quick response to the guide’s directions are a must.

Dam releases from the Savage Reservoir only occur three (3) times a year.    Due to the size of the river and the water releases of 4 hours, we can only accommodate 20 people a  day on this trip.  The format for the Savage River is 4 guests and a guide per raft.  We will run the river in the morning, break for lunch and do a second run in the afternoon.

Located about 30 minutes from Friendsville, this trip is a perfect complement to the Upper Yough.  The whitewater releases form Savage River Dam have been arranged to occur on Sundays following a Saturday Upper Yough release.

Join us for 2 days of whitewater action and save $10 off each day.

Details details As you can see many of these rivers will be offered in duckies, this type of whitewater activity is much closer to kayaking than traditional commercial whitewater rafting. These trips are intended for the “whitewater enthusiast”, closet kayaker or the plain crazy. These experiences will drag you deeper into the sport of whitewater and we hope will serve as a gateway to the whitewater world. This is a smattering of what you may see as an Adventurers’ Club member. Other rivers may be visited based on water flows and staff experience. Because access to these rivers is so limited due to rain fall, even our staff can not always conduct enough river runs to be familiar with a section of river. Any given year can find us focusing our efforts on one section or another. Join us on a whitewater odyssey!
